TroFCCA - Tropical Forests and Climate Change AdaptationNovember, 05 2009

The importance of forest ecosystems as providers of goods and services for society has been widely discussed. As forest loss can lead to profoundly negative costs to society in terms of foregone goods and services, there is an urgent need to protect forests, either through conservation or sustainable management. Climate change (including climate variability) coupled with degrading processes such as high deforestation rates will almost certainly affect the provision of goods and services from forests and, hence, hinder sustainable development.

Tropical forest ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to climate change variability and long term changes in temperature and rainfall. Unfortunately, these same vulnerable ecosystems are of great importance to millions of people whose livelihoods depend on the forests. TroFCCA is an effort to expand our current limited understanding of climate change impacts on forests and to develop robust methods to assess vulnerability and plan for adaptation within these systems.

UNFCCC Secretariat Announces Additional Meeting Time in AprilFebruary, 24 2010

23 February 2010: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced that the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC has decided that the next round of formal UN climate change negotiations under the Convention will take place from 9-11 April 2010, in Bonn, Germany.

Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, noted that the April meeting “constitutes a quick return to the negotiations.” He stressed that the decision to intensify the negotiating schedule “underlines the commitment by governments to move the negotiations forward towards success in Cancun.”

De Boer added that this commitment was further strengthened by the fact that over 100 countries have submitted communications to the Secretariat since Copenhagen. The Secretariat reported that: 40 developed country parties have submitted information on their 2020 emission cut targets, with various base years; 30 developing country parties have communicated information on their mitigation plans; and 39 parties have provided additional information regarding the Copenhagen Accord
