Forest Day 3October, 08 2009

2009 is possibly the most important year for forests in living memory. We are in the final stretch of the road to Copenhagen, and COP 15, where negotiators expect to finalise a post-Kyoto global climate agreement in December. To coincide with the conference, CIFOR, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and the Government of Denmark will host Forest Day 3. Forest Day 3 will build on the success of Forest Day 1 and 2 in helping to ensure forests are high on the agenda for future climate outcomes, and will pave the way forward in making these outcomes work beyond Copenhagen.

Forest Day 3 will be held on 13 December at the Radisson SAS Falconer Hotel, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Call for Nominations for CSO Representatives to the UN-REDD Programme is now open!October, 09 2009

The UN-REDD Programme recognizes that the success of REDD initiatives depends on the engagement and ownership of all stakeholders in forest landscapes, including indigenous peoples and other forest-dwelling communities, as well as local, national, regional, and international organizations that comprise civil society. Thus, it is a matter of priority to ensure that representatives of civil society are supported to engage in REDD initiatives in order to provide essential expertise and ensure transparency and accountability in all program activities.

The UN-REDD Programme is seeking nominations for four Civil Society Organization representatives to serve on its Policy Board – one representative of a northern CSO and one representative of a CSO that operates in each of the three UN-REDD Programme regions (Africa, Asia & Pacific, Latin America & the Caribbean). The self-selection of CSO representatives to the Policy Board is being facilitated by the Rights and Resources Group, Secretariat of the Rights and Resources Initiative, at the invitation of the UN-REDD Programme.

TroFCCA - Tropical Forests and Climate Change AdaptationNovember, 05 2009

The importance of forest ecosystems as providers of goods and services for society has been widely discussed. As forest loss can lead to profoundly negative costs to society in terms of foregone goods and services, there is an urgent need to protect forests, either through conservation or sustainable management. Climate change (including climate variability) coupled with degrading processes such as high deforestation rates will almost certainly affect the provision of goods and services from forests and, hence, hinder sustainable development.

Tropical forest ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to climate change variability and long term changes in temperature and rainfall. Unfortunately, these same vulnerable ecosystems are of great importance to millions of people whose livelihoods depend on the forests. TroFCCA is an effort to expand our current limited understanding of climate change impacts on forests and to develop robust methods to assess vulnerability and plan for adaptation within these systems.

TroFCCA aims to address mainstreaming adaptation into development policy by undertaking relevant

Challenges and opportunities for multi-stakeholder engagement as part of REDD-plus readiness processes:

Thursday June 10, 18:00-19:30 PM, Room Solar, Ministry of Environment

IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature) invites you to a panel discussion on the contributions that multi-stakeholder participation makes to the building of REDD-plus strategies in tropical forest nations.

Multi-stakeholder platforms facilitate equitable participation and efficient interventions. Better communication and understanding between different actors can help avoid or diminish potential conflict. The discussion will explore how stakeholder engagement can contribute to credible and implementable REDD-plus strategies. Experiences of forest governance and REDD readiness strategies are highlighted, as are partnerships between government, civil society and the private sector that contribute to the development of options for benefit-sharing, the clarification of carbon rights, and systems for Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV).
